Residents across several parts of Navi Mumbai have reported receiving muddy and discoloured water over the past few days, prompting the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) to launch a dedicated toll-free helpline for complaints and announce on-ground inspections by the civic administration.
Mayor Sujata Patil said that citizens can now register water-related complaints on the helpline number 1800222309, following multiple grievances from areas including Airoli, Koparkhairane, Sanpada, Juinagar and Turbhe.
Civic officials said the issue emerged after a temporary shutdown of the main Morbe Dam pipeline and other water distribution lines for maintenance work. According to the corporation, this led to sediment and fine silt getting disturbed within pipelines when water supply resumed, causing temporary discolouration in some areas.
The civic body claimed that over 650 water samples were tested across the city and were found to be safe for consumption, although residents continued to report irregular supply quality in several localities.
Mayor Patil has directed officials to visit complaint sites, collect fresh water samples and share test results with residents to ensure transparency. She is also expected to personally review the inspection process during visits across the city.
Officials have further stated that in some housing societies, empty overhead tanks may have also contributed to the mixing of settled sediment with incoming water, worsening the appearance of supply.
Meanwhile, residents have questioned the civic body’s communication and response time, saying they were not adequately informed about the issue despite repeated complaints.
The corporation has urged citizens to use the helpline for faster resolution and assured that corrective measures are being taken to restore normal water quality across the city.
