The new e-challan system for the eight-lane coastal route was launched this month, and it has already recorded 16,000 fines in the first 24 days, from September 4 to 27.

Out of the total challans, 11,173 were for speeding, making up 72% of all cases. Another 4,423 fines were issued for using bus lanes illegally. The highest speed recorded during this period was 132 kmph.

Under the new system, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras captured all violations. Speeding carries a fine of INR 2,000. First-time misuse of bus lanes is fined INR 500, while repeat offenders face INR 1,500.

Authorities have warned that repeated violations may lead to vehicle confiscation and FIRs under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Speed limits on the coastal route are set at 80 kmph, 40 kmph on interchanges, and 60 kmph inside tunnels.

Seven ANPR cameras are installed along the route. Three are inside the twin tunnels, and four are near Baroda Palace in Worli. As per reports, speeding is most often recorded in the late and early hours when traffic is low.

But since the new system, residents have reported an improvement in high-end car disturbances. The promenade, underpasses, and coastal road have been open to traffic 24/7 since August 15. Authorities continue to warn drivers that repeated infractions will face strict consequences.
