The Mumbai traffic police issued challans to 17,495 motorists for violating various norms during Holi celebrations.
In a two-day special campaign for Holi and Rangpanchmi, the city traffic police levied fines running up to nearly INR 1.8 crore from the offenders.
According to the data released by the traffic department, 183 motorists were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 4,949 were found riding their vehicles without helmets.
With nearly 5000 challans, the maximum penalty was imposed on motorcyclists riding without helmets.
Action taken against motorists for violations:
Jumping Signals: 1,942
Parking vehicles obstructing the flow of traffic: 4654
No-entry: 992
Driving without licence - 826
Riding triple seat on two-wheelers - 425
Drunk driving - 183
Honking needlessly – 45
Wrong side driving - 33
Meanwhile, on Friday, March 14, Thane traffic police recorded 81 drunk driving violations. DCP (traffic) Pankaj Shirsat said: "The highest number of violations was recorded by Kalyan traffic unit at 20, followed by Wagle unit at 19."
It is pertinent to not that nearly 11,000 policemen, including traffic cops, fanned out on the streets of Mumbai on Thursday, March 13, and Friday, March 14, for bandobast.
