Hundreds of Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai and neighbouring Thane, with government and civic hospitals treating participants for injuries ranging from bruises and body pain to fractures and head trauma. While a majority of those injured were discharged after receiving medical attention, several participants remained admitted or under treatment following the festivities.
Civic authorities had made medical arrangements ahead of the celebrations, with additional hospital beds being kept available and healthcare personnel being deployed in shifts. Hospitals were also directed to maintain adequate stocks of medicines, injections and surgical supplies to manage festival-related emergencies.
Mumbai: 376 Govindas Injured, 53 Remain Hospitalised
As many as 376 Govindas were reported injured during Dahi Handi festivities in Mumbai, according to figures compiled from government and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) hospitals up to 8 am on September 6. Of the total, 286 participants had been discharged after treatment, while 53 remained admitted and 37 were undergoing treatment.
Central Mumbai accounted for the largest number of cases, with 183 injured Govindas being reported. Of these, 29 were admitted, 23 remained under treatment and 131 were discharged. Hospitals in the eastern suburbs recorded 62 injured participants, including 11 admissions and 51 discharges. In the western suburbs, 126 injuries were reported, with nine participants admitted, 14 undergoing treatment and 103 discharged.
Among individual facilities, KEM Hospital handled the highest number of injured Govindas, with 76 cases. Eighteen patients were admitted and 58 were discharged. HBT Trauma Hospital reported 34 cases, Rajawadi Hospital and V Desai Hospital recorded 33 each, while Nair Hospital treated 32 injured participants. Sion Hospital and BDBA Hospital reported 18 cases each.
Preparations had been made by the BMC in anticipation of injuries during the festivities. More than 100 beds were reportedly kept ready across civic hospitals in Mumbai and its suburbs. Health officers and other staff were deployed in three shifts, while hospitals were instructed to ensure adequate availability of medicines, injections and surgical materials.
Thane: 56 Govindas Injured, Fractures and Head Injuries Reported
At least 56 Govindas were injured during Dahi Handi celebrations in Thane, according to hospital records prepared on September 5. Of these, 22 were treated at the District Government Hospital in Thane, while another 34 received treatment at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa.
The injuries recorded ranged from relatively minor bruises and pain to fractures, head injuries and trauma involving the legs, shoulders, hands, chest, back and neck. Two 25-year-old Govindas were reported to have sustained fractures to their right legs, while other participants were treated for ankle, knee, shoulder, back, hand and chest injuries.
Children and teenagers were also among those requiring medical attention. The records included two 11-year-olds and a 12-year-old who sustained injuries to the lip, shoulder and leg respectively. A 17-year-old participant was recorded as having suffered a seizure, while a 16-year-old was treated for a head injury. Several adults were also reported with head, chest, knee and other injuries.
Those receiving treatment were reported to have come from different parts of Thane, Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, including Kalwa, Wagle Estate, Kisan Nagar, Balkum, Jogeshwari, Vikhroli, Goregaon and Bandra. The range of cases treated at the two hospitals reflected injuries of varying severity sustained during the celebrations.
