Residents of Versova have strongly opposed the proposed cutting of trees at Nana Nani Park for the upcoming Versova–Madh Coastal Road project. The protest began after civic authorities issued notices stating that trees in the park would be felled for the project.

According to the notice, around 184 trees are proposed to be cut, while 164 trees will be replanted. However, local residents argue that mature trees and long-standing green cover cannot simply be replaced. The park, developed nearly two decades ago, is a popular recreational space for senior citizens, walkers and families in the area.

The trees were reportedly marked by the civic road and construction department, prompting immediate backlash from locals. Residents gathered at the park to voice their concerns, stating that urban green spaces are essential for environmental balance and community well-being.

Civic officials have maintained that the land on which the park stands was originally reserved for a road and that the park was developed with the understanding that it could be reclaimed for infrastructure in the future. Authorities have also indicated that part of the coastal road may pass over the park on pillars, and that the entire park may not be removed.

Despite these assurances, residents continue to demand that alternative solutions be explored to protect as many trees as possible while proceeding with development.
