State to set up Safety Nets, High-Level Panel to Prevent Suicides at Atal Setu

The Maharashtra government has announced a series of measures to improve safety at Atal Setu following a rise in suicide incidents on the sea bridge.

Industries Minister Uday Samant said the state has decided to install safety nets on the bridge and constitute a high-level committee headed by senior police officials to recommend long-term measures to prevent such incidents.

Speaking in the Legislative Council during a discussion raised by MLC Uma Khapre, the minister said he had discussed the issue with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who directed officials to take immediate steps to enhance safety and prevent loss of life.

According to the minister, the proposed committee will include senior police officers and representatives from all concerned agencies. It will prepare a permanent action plan to prevent similar incidents in the future. The government also plans to increase patrolling, deploy surveillance teams, and install safety nets along the bridge.

Sharing official data, Samant said six suicide-related incidents were reported on Atal Setu in 2024, resulting in four deaths. In 2025, six incidents claimed five lives. So far in 2026, three such incidents have been reported, leading to two deaths.

The minister said the government is committed to implementing effective and long-term measures to make Atal Setu safer for commuters.
