The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will construct around 12,000 homes of 300 sq. ft each for sanitation workers under its “Aashray” housing scheme.

According to Navshakti, the construction will take place in two phases, with ₹1,120 crore allocated in this year’s budget.

The BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department employs about 29,000 sanitation workers. These workers toil day and night to keep Mumbai clean, often facing health risks while performing their duties.

To improve their living conditions, the BMC is providing housing under the “Aashray” scheme. In the first phase, redevelopment of colonies in the ‘A’ ward (Cochin Street), R/South ward (Powells Land), and ‘E’ ward (Siddharth Nagar) has been completed, and the homes have already been handed over to workers. Redevelopment work is also in progress at Tankpakhadi in ‘E’ ward and Gautam Nagar in F/South ward.

In the second phase, work orders for 30 locations have already been issued. Redevelopment has started at 23 of these sites, while the remaining 7 will begin shortly.
