Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike on Thursday after holding talks with Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh.
Wangchuk had been fasting to press for his demands and had earlier stated that he would call off the protest only if the Centre assured that no punitive action would be taken against students participating in peaceful demonstrations.
Following discussions with the ministers, the government reportedly assured him that students involved in non-violent protests would not face retaliatory legal action. After receiving the assurance, Wangchuk announced the end of his fast.
Expressing gratitude to his supporters, Wangchuk said the protest had always been aimed at safeguarding democratic values and the rights of young people to raise their voices peacefully. He also thanked doctors, volunteers, and citizens who stood by him throughout the hunger strike.
The development marks a significant step in the ongoing dialogue between the Centre and the protesters, with expectations that discussions on the remaining issues will continue.
