SRV Hospitals Launches Advanced Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Centre in Chembur

SRV Hospitals in Chembur has launched an Advanced Robotic-Assisted Joint Replacement Centre of Excellence using the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution, aimed at providing advanced and personalised treatment for patients with knee and joint problems.

Knee pain can affect more than just mobility. Difficulty climbing stairs, walking long distances or commuting to work can increase dependence on others and impact a person’s confidence and quality of life. The centre was inaugurated in the presence of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly member Mangesh Kudalkar. Medical experts, public representatives and social-sector professionals also attended the event.

Robotic Technology for Personalised Treatment

The VELYS™ robotic system provides surgeons with real-time information during knee replacement procedures, helping them plan and perform surgery according to the patient’s individual anatomy.

The technology also features CT-free planning, eliminating the need for an additional pre-operative CT scan for surgical planning. However, the robotic system assists the surgeon, while the final decision regarding surgery and the appropriate treatment remains based on the doctor’s clinical assessment.

Focus on Mobility Restoration

Dr Abhay Vispute, Founder and Director of SRV Hospitals, said robotic technology can enable greater precision and personalisation in treatment. The ultimate objective, however, is to help patients regain mobility, confidence and independence.

The centre is part of SRV Hospitals’ Mobility Restoration Programme, which includes preventive care, medication and conservative treatments, specialist consultations, surgery when required, and structured physiotherapy and rehabilitation. A multidisciplinary team of orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists will be involved in patient care.

Rising Osteoarthritis Cases

Maharashtra was estimated to have around 63.7 lakh osteoarthritis patients in 2019, placing it among the states with the highest number of cases in India.

Ageing, excess weight, lack of physical activity and previous joint injuries are among the major risk factors for osteoarthritis, with the knee being one of the most commonly affected joints. While robotic-assisted technology is expected to bring greater precision to knee replacement procedures, post-operative physiotherapy and rehabilitation will continue to play a crucial role in helping patients achieve better mobility and recovery.
