A social media post by Mumbai Police on the issue of consent has triggered a war of words with Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, amid the ongoing controversy surrounding comedian Pranit More’s show and a viral “INR 370 biryani” remark.
The controversy erupted after a video clip from one of Pranit More’s performances went viral on social media. In the clip, an audience member allegedly suggested that spending INR 370 on biryani during a date entitled him to certain expectations in return. The remark sparked outrage online, with many users calling it sexist and inappropriate.
In response to the debate, Mumbai Police shared a post on social media carrying the message “#BiryaniIsNotConsent,” highlighting that buying someone food, gifts or paying for a date does not imply consent. The post quickly gained traction online and drew widespread attention.

However, Priyanka Chaturvedi criticized the police's approach, questioning why law enforcement agencies were engaging in social media commentary instead of focusing on legal action if any wrongdoing had occurred. She described the development as “disgraceful” and argued that police resources should be directed toward enforcing the law rather than participating in online debates.

Mumbai Police defended the post, stating that it was intended as a public awareness message about consent and respectful behavior. The police maintained that spreading awareness on such issues is an important part of their public outreach efforts.
The exchange between Chaturvedi and Mumbai Police soon escalated into a public debate on social media, with users divided over whether the police were right to use a viral controversy to spread awareness or whether they should have limited themselves to legal action.
Meanwhile, the controversy has intensified scrutiny of Pranit More’s content, with several clips from his shows being widely discussed online. The comedian has faced criticism from various quarters and reportedly issued an apology following the backlash.
The incident has reignited conversations around consent, gender sensitivity, the responsibilities of public figures and the role of law enforcement agencies in addressing social issues through social media platforms.
