In a relief to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the Supreme Court has put a stay order on the fine imposed on Mumbai’s civic body. The apex court fined BMC ₹5 crore on National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) order.
After inspection, earlier in October 2018, the NGT slapped BMC with the fine for not carrying out proper solid waste management in the city and for violating the rules enlisted under Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016. The inspection was carried out in three garbage dumping grounds in the city.
Along with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Mumbai Suburban Collector and BMC officials examined three dumping grounds last year including Deonar, Mulund, and Kanjurmarg.

After carrying out the inspection, the NGT imposed a fine on BMC for harming the environment. BMC filed a review petition with the NGT which said that the administration was not given a chance to explain itself. However, NGT rejected the petition in December 2018.
