The first gas-based crematorium for pets in the Thane Municipal Corporation area has been launched, fulfilling a long-standing demand of animal lovers. The gas burner facility, set up in Majiwada village behind the Balkum fire station, was inaugurated on Saturday morning by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.

Sarnaik said he had earlier requested then Chief Minister and current Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to establish a dedicated crematorium for pets in Thane. As a result, a separate pet cemetery has now been created adjacent to the Majiwada village cemetery, with its own independent entrance.

Addressing issues related to stray animals, Sarnaik added that he has suggested to Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao the creation of a dog shelter along Ghodbunder Road, away from residential areas. A search for a suitable site is currently underway. He also expressed plans to develop a pet garden in Thane, similar to the one in Mumbai.

Sarnaik noted that cemeteries within the Ovala-Majiwada Assembly constituency are being renovated and beautified using a state government fund of INR 50 crore allocated for upgrading basic municipal facilities. Renovation work is ongoing at cemeteries in Yeoor village, Rambaug-Upvan, Maji\wada village, Waghbil village, and Mogharpada. The newly built pet cemetery at Majiwada village forms part of this redevelopment effort.
