Under the Central Government’s “Rabies Free India” policy, the “Rabies Free Thane” campaign has been underway within Thane Municipal Corporation limits since 2024. From November 14, the Corporation has launched a daily vaccination drive alongside the Rabies Pulse Campaign. Commissioner Saurabh Rao stated that the objective is to declare Thane a rabies-controlled city by 2030.
Under the Pulse Vaccination Campaign conducted in January–February 2024 and 2025, the Thane Municipal Corporation vaccinated 7,409 stray dogs in January 2024. Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil reported that an additional 11,582 stray dogs were vaccinated in February 2025.
As part of the ongoing campaign, stray dogs and cats will receive anti-rabies vaccinations, and radium reflector collars will be attached to them. For effective implementation, the programme is being carried out with the participation of volunteers from Animal Friends and other local NGOs.
