Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC)’s new budget for 2026–27 prioritises easing traffic congestion and improving the city’s water supply. Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao on Monday, March 23, presented the INR 6,221 crore plan and talked about TMC’s commitment to improve quality of life for citizens. Interestingly, the budget has been allocated with no hike in taxes.
The budget focuses on improving the water supply. The current demand stands at 621 MLD however, the city receives 590 million litres of water per day. The plan includes securing 50 MLD additional water from the BMC and utilising INR 555.16 crore under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme for projects.
Additional funds will be used for secondary and tertiary water treatment, cluster development, and modernising a 300-kilometre sewage network.

Plans on Revenue Collection
Rao also talked about revenue generation. Last year, revenue from the water supply decreased, but TMC got government grants.
This year, the corporation intends to raise funds through open market municipal bonds, with credit ratings and financial updates underway. It also intends to avail an INR 500-crore loan from the union government, which will be used for drainage, road development, and infrastructure projects.
TMC plans to boost non-ticket income for Thane Municipal Transport (TMT) by leasing bus depots, bus stops, and vehicles for advertising. Additional TMC properties will also be leased for hoardings, LED screens, and other outdoor advertising. New projects will largely follow a public-private partnership model to avoid straining municipal funds.
The property tax system has been digitalised, and from April 1, tax invoices will be sent to registered taxpayers via mobile devices. Drones and mapping technologies will be used to identify unevaluated properties.

Other highlights of the budget include modernising municipal schools, welfare programmes for women, the elderly, and people with disabilities, promoting a sustainable environment, conserving trees, and improving transportation infrastructure.
