The Thane Municipal Corporation has issued a formal directive to take penal action against hotels and local tea stalls that continue using disposable paper cups for serving beverages.

This order was issued following a formal complaint filed by Vishal Kurkute. The civic body has circulated instructions to assistant commissioners of all ward committees, granting them authority to act against establishments violating health and safety norms.

According to the advisory, the widespread use of paper cups poses serious health risks. Most disposable paper cups are lined with a thin layer of plastic or wax (polyethylene) to make them waterproof. When hot beverages like tea or coffee are poured into these cups, microplastics and harmful chemicals may leach into the drink.

The report highlights that chemicals used in the production and lining of these cups could lead to serious long-term health issues, including a potential risk of cancer. It also points out that large-scale production and storage of such cups often fail to meet strict hygiene standards.

The Thane Municipal Corporation has warned that any establishment violating these norms will face strict legal action and heavy fines. Officials have been instructed to carry out immediate inspections and ensure strict enforcement of the ban.

To avoid penalties, tea vendors and hotel owners in Thane are now required to switch to safer alternatives such as glass, ceramic, or stainless steel for serving beverages.
