The Maharashtra government on Monday, April 13, announced plans to establish a major music institution in memory of legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on Sunday.
The decision was taken during a state cabinet meeting. Officials indicated that the proposed institution is likely to be set up near Rangsharda Hotel at Bandra Reclamation in Mumbai.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the idea for the institution was originally envisioned by Asha Bhosle herself, and the government will now work to bring her proposal to reality.
According to senior officials, Bhosle had discussed the plan with Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, and the process of identifying suitable land had already begun before her demise.
The proposed institution is expected to be of international standards, designed to provide world-class music education and nurture emerging talent. It will be the second major music institution in Maharashtra dedicated to a legendary musician.
The report also notes that earlier initiatives include a proposed international music college in honour of Lata Mangeshkar, with a dedicated campus and approved funding under the state government.
The government has stated that further details regarding the new Asha Bhosle music institution will be announced in due course.
