The incident occurred near an under-construction building on Linking Road in Khar West. According to police, the tree crashed through protective metal sheets surrounding the site before falling onto the moving auto-rickshaw carrying three passengers.
The injured have been identified as Harshita Kumar (21), Aarika Shrivastava (15), and Manasvi Shrivastava (19). Harshita and Aarika sustained severe head injuries and are undergoing treatment at P. D. Hinduja Hospital, where they remain in critical condition. Manasvi also suffered injuries, including a leg fracture.
Police said the auto-rickshaw driver immediately rushed the injured girls to the hospital after the accident.
Based on a complaint filed by Manasvi Shrivastava, the Khar police registered an FIR against Bluestone Properties Pvt Ltd for alleged negligence. The case has been filed under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to causing grievous hurt through negligent acts and endangering public safety.
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) alleged that debris and construction material had been piled around the base of the trees at the site, causing them to lean dangerously toward the road. Civic authorities also stated that the developer had not sought permission for tree cutting or trimming.
Developer Denies Responsibility
The construction company denied that ongoing work caused the tree collapse. Company representatives claimed the tree was old and weakened by termites, adding that they are cooperating with the investigation and supporting the injured victims.
Investigation Underway
Police and civic authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Officials are examining whether proper safety precautions were followed at the construction site and whether negligence contributed to the accident.
