Unseasonal Rains Impact Hapus Mango Production; Prices Surge in Mumbai

Unseasonal rainfall in the Konkan region has significantly affected the production of Hapus (Alphonso) mangoes this year, leading to reduced supply and higher prices in Mumbai markets.

Traders said mango output has dropped sharply, with production estimated at nearly 25 per cent of normal levels. The season is also expected to end earlier than usual due to the weather impact.

At the Navi Mumbai APMC market, arrivals have declined considerably. Compared to the usual inflow of around one lakh boxes during this period, only about 40,000 boxes are currently reaching the market, with a slight increase expected in the coming days.

Despite lower supply, demand for Hapus mangoes remains strong in Mumbai, pushing prices upward. Depending on quality, mangoes are being sold between INR 2,000 and INR 6,000 per box, with premium varieties commanding higher rates.

Traders noted that mangoes from southern states are entering the market to bridge the supply gap. However, authentic Konkan Hapus remains limited and continues to be in high demand.

Export challenges have further affected the market, with shipments to Gulf countries facing disruptions and high air freight costs impacting exports to Europe and the United States.

Experts believe the combination of reduced production and sustained demand will result in a shorter and more expensive mango season for consumers this year.
