To enhance road safety on major and secondary roads in Mumbai city, its eastern suburbs and western suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will use thermoplastic colour.

Under this project, old and dilapidated road markings will be removed and new thermoplastic markings will be applied.

The civic body has issued a tender process for the next two years, with an estimated cost of INR 150 crore.

As mentioned in the tender document, the project involves applying thermoplastic colour to various traffic markings on major and secondary roads.

This will mainly include lane lines, zebra crossings, stop lines, directional arrows and other traffic signs. Any dilapidated or partially visible thermoplastic colour will be removed first before applying the new colour.

This scope of work also includes works like repairing damaged or worn out dividers and curb stones, installing markers on elevated pavements, painting curbs and dividers.

All activities will be carried out under the supervision and guidance of the concerned engineers to ensure proper quality and safety standards.

Officials stated that thermoplastic road paint is more durable and highly reflective at night, making lane markings and zebra crossings clearly visible, which improves traffic management and reduces accidents.

Failure to follow regulations or provide adequate barricading can attract a penalty of up to Rs 2,000 per metre per day, capped at 5% of the total contract value.
