In a major monsoon preparation measure, Western Railway has installed 239 Digital Axle Counters (DAC) on its Mumbai suburban network to prevent signalling disruptions due to waterlogging and to ensure uninterrupted train services during the monsoon.

The railways have covered 1,860 signalling systems with waterproof plastic covers to protect critical equipment from damage due to rain.

Rain often affects the signalling system and disrupts train services.

Railway officials said that even if the conventional track circuit is disrupted due to waterlogging, digital axle counters will help in smooth running of trains.

The technology works by counting the number of wheels of a train as it enters and exits a section of track, which allows the signalling system to accurately determine whether the section is occupied or empty.

Officials said the purpose of installing DAC is to improve the reliability of train identification and reduce delays in adverse weather conditions.

With lakhs of passengers relying on Western Railway's suburban services every day, it is crucial that the signalling system remains in good condition to maintain timely and safe operations.

Along with the deployment of DAC, Western Railway has also conducted a comprehensive inspection of the signalling infrastructure as part of its annual monsoon preparedness programme.

To minimise technical failures, the earthing system has been checked, power supply equipment has been tested and cable insulation has been inspected.

Waterproof plastic covers have also been installed on most signalling installations and Automatic Warning System (AWS) magnets to prevent disruptions due to moisture.
