Construction of the new Jogeshwari Terminus in Mumbai is progressing steadily and is expected to be completed by January 2027, providing Western Railway with an additional terminal for long-distance train operations.

According to railway officials, approximately 55% of the project work has been completed so far. Western Railway General Manager Ram Shray Pandey has set January 2027 as the target date for the completion of the project and the commencement of passenger services.

Once operational, the terminus will offer dedicated infrastructure for the arrival, parking, maintenance, and departure of long-distance trains. This is expected to improve both train punctuality and overall operational efficiency on the Western Railway network.

The project was originally scheduled for completion in March 2025. However, design modifications led to a delay in the timeline. The initial plan included three platforms, but the design was later revised to accommodate four platforms.

The additional fourth platform will function as a home platform, while the lengths of the existing platforms have also been increased. These enhancements will help accommodate a larger number of passengers and support future growth in train services.

Furthermore, the width of all platforms has been expanded from 9 metres to 12 metres, improving passenger movement and safety. Upon completion, Jogeshwari Terminus will be capable of handling up to 12 Mail and Express trains with 24 coaches each per day.

The project also includes the development of a dedicated coaching depot for Vande Bharat trains. Passenger associations have been urging authorities to accelerate the construction work, citing the growing need for additional terminal infrastructure in Mumbai.

The new terminus is expected to significantly reduce congestion at major stations such as Borivali, Andheri, Bandra Terminus, Dadar, and Mumbai Central. At present, the simultaneous movement of suburban and long-distance passengers at these stations often leads to severe crowding and operational challenges.

Strategically located near Ram Mandir railway station and approximately 250 metres from Jogeshwari Metro Station, the terminus will offer seamless connectivity through both rail and metro networks. The station complex will also feature parking facilities, taxi services, auto-rickshaw stands, and other passenger amenities.

Notably, this will be Mumbai’s first entirely new railway terminus in 34 years, following the development of Lokmanya Tilak Terminus in Kurla. While stations such as Dadar and Panvel have been upgraded into termini over the years, Jogeshwari Terminus represents the city's first newly built railway terminus since then.

With more than half of the construction already completed, the project is expected to bring significant relief to Mumbai’s rail passengers and strengthen Western Railway’s capacity to handle growing demand in the years ahead.
