A workshop on transgender rights and welfare was organised in Thane by the Maharashtra Social Justice Department, focusing on awareness, inclusion, and effective implementation of welfare schemes for the transgender community.
The session addressed key challenges faced by transgender persons, including social discrimination, limited access to education and employment opportunities, and barriers in availing healthcare and government benefits. Experts and social workers stressed the need for proper enforcement of legal provisions to ensure dignity, equality, and protection of rights.
Participants discussed the importance of sensitising government officials, law enforcement agencies, and the public to issues related to gender identity, with the aim of reducing stigma and promoting social acceptance. The workshop also reviewed existing government initiatives and support systems designed for the upliftment and rehabilitation of transgender individuals in Maharashtra.
Officials and speakers underlined the need for stronger coordination between government departments, civil society organisations, and community groups to ensure effective delivery of welfare schemes. The programme concluded with a call for sustained awareness efforts and inclusive policy implementation at the grassroots level.
