After Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan suffered a thumb injury while playing against Australia, young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant has been called in as cover. Owing to the injury, Dhawan has been ruled out for three matches after the scan reports displayed a fractured left thumb.

Pant will reach Nottingham on June 12 prior to India's match against New Zealand. Earlier, Pant was omitted from the original squad despite his red-hot form in the last one year.

“Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored,” the Indian team said in a statement on Wednesday night.

“Dhawan sustained an injury on the back of his left hand in the region between the index finger and thumb...,” it added.

Meanwhile, as per the reports, he won’t be considered a replacement till the time the team management takes a final call on Dhawan’s availability for the rest of the tournament.

However, former players such as Sunil Gavaskar have voiced their opinion to include him in the squad if Dhawan fails to recover quickly for India.
