A 34-year-old woman was killed and six others were injured after a car driven by a 70-year-old man rammed into a motorcycle and three autorickshaws at a traffic signal in Malad West on Sunday night.
The deceased, identified as Priyanka Satra, was travelling as a pillion rider with her husband, Mayank, when the accident occurred at the Mamlatdarwadi–S V Road junction around 8pm. The impact threw the couple off the motorcycle. Priyanka died in the crash, while Mayank suffered fractures and back injuries.
Police arrested the car driver, identified as Krishna Chamankar. During questioning, Chamankar allegedly told police that he pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while approaching the signal. A medical examination found no alcohol in his blood.
The car went on to hit three autorickshaws, injuring their drivers, Subhedar Chandra Gautam, 50, Ramkesh Rajbhar, 35, and Abdul Rehman Shaikh, 25. Two passengers were also injured, including 48-year-old Zaitun Bi Imam, who suffered serious head injuries. All the injured were taken to Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital.
Police have booked Chamankar for rash and dangerous driving and negligence. He was produced before a magistrate on Monday and was remanded in judicial custody.
The incident triggered anger among the victim’s relatives, who gathered at Malad police station and demanded stringent action against the accused. Priyanka, a law graduate and mother of two young children, was cremated on Monday. Her injured husband was brought from the hospital to attend her final rites before being taken back for treatment.
