Bombay High Court on Wednesday extended the protection to activists Anand Teltumbde and Gautam Navlakha from arrest till November 22. Terminating Maharashtra Police to take actions against the activists, the court ordered protection while hearing the petition.
The petition was filed by Teltumbde and Navlakha seeking to quash the FIR filed against them by Pune Police in connection with the Bhima Koregaon incident which happened on January 1. A bench including Justices BP Dharmadhikari and Sarang Kotwal posted the matter on Thursday providing relief to the activist after Teltumbde’s lawyer Mihir Desai sought the high court for the same.
Earlier on November 2, Bombay HC had extended the solace provided to the activists till November 21 in connection with Bhima Koregaon Case and their connection with the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).
Supreme Court had earlier directed Maharashtra government and its police to put the activists under house arrest for another four weeks including activist Vara Vara Rao, Gautam Navlakha, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, and Sudha Bharadwaj.
However, Pune Police arrested activists Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, and Sudha Bharadwaj after their house arrest period ended. After rejecting the bail plea, Pune session court had sent the activists in the police custody. All the activist had been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
