Mumbai recorded 2,188 cybercrime cases between January 1 and June 30, 2025, marking a 17% drop from 2,638 incidents during the same period in 2024.
Online fraud was the most reported cybercrime in 2025, with 207 incidents. This was followed by obscene texts and posts at 121, fake profiles and photo morphing at 77, hacking at 37, phishing and spoofing at 26, and data theft at 15.
Fraud-related cases made up the majority of complaints. Out of 1,536 such cases, 469 involved share market investment fraud, 184 were job offer scams, 17 were insurance and provident fund scams, 33 involved cryptocurrency fraud, and 103 were digital arrest scams.
In 2024, credit card fraud alone totalled to 585 incidents, showing that financial theft continues to be a major risk. So far, cyber police solved 566 cases in the first half of 2025 and arrested 507 suspects.
As per a report by FPJ, experts say the decline is due to fewer cases being officially registered, not a real fall in cybercriminal activity. It should be noted that when fewer FIRs are filed, official numbers appear lower.
Officials have urged people to be cautious during online transactions, avoid clicking unknown links, and never share information with strangers. The FPJ report also says that the technology teams are improving investigations and awareness, as cyber security is a matter of both technology and public awareness.
