As per a data released by the Mumbai Police, street crime in the city has shown an overall decline in 2025 compared to the previous year.
Most categories, including robbery, theft and vehicle theft, have recorded fewer cases, reflecting improved policing and surveillance across the city.
Data indicates that robbery incidents dropped significantly from 474 cases in 2024 to 321 in 2025. Chain snatching during robberies also saw a decrease, falling from 116 cases last year to 85 this year. Similarly, attempts to commit robbery declined from 19 cases in 2024 to just 10 cases in 2025.
Theft-related street crimes registered a slight reduction, with 8,060 cases reported this year compared to 8,262 cases in 2024. Motor vehicle thefts followed the same downward trend, decreasing from 2,589 cases last year to 2,299 cases in 2025. Police officials attributed this drop to targeted action against vehicle theft gangs and better monitoring systems.
However, snatching incidents emerged as a cause for concern, becoming the only street crime category to record an increase. Cases rose sharply from 117 in 2024 to 181 in 2025. According to police, offenders are increasingly targeting pedestrians, particularly during early morning and late evening hours.
Senior police officers credited the overall reduction in street crime to intensified patrolling, special enforcement drives, deployment of mobile police teams, plainclothes surveillance, hotspot-based policing, and expanded CCTV coverage across the city.
Authorities have advised residents to stay alert in crowded and vulnerable areas and to promptly report any suspicious activity, as police continue efforts to enhance public safety and keep Mumbai’s streets secure.
