The incident happened on October 23 in Indore, when two Australian cricketers went to a café from their hotel. They were allegedly inappropriately touched by a man during the outing. The Australian team reported the incident, and police filed a case under Sections 74 (use of criminal force to outrage a woman’s modesty) and 78 (stalking) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused, Aqueel Sheikh, was arrested after a six-hour police operation and has been remanded for two days. Police said he also has a criminal record.
Following the incident, Navi Mumbai Police have tightened security for the semifinal between India and Australia on Thursday and the final on Sunday.
A senior police officer said that since October 18, security guards have been posted at all hotels where players are staying. “We have also arranged police escorts whenever teams travel between the stadium and hotels. Around 600 police personnel, including 75 officers, are deployed at the stadium,” the officer said.
The officer added that players are asked to inform police before leaving their hotels so that security can be provided. “We were already taking precautions, but sometimes players go out without telling us, which creates a problem. If they inform us, we make sure they are protected,” he said.
