Two teenagers died after a speeding tempo allegedly crashed into their scooter on the Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road early Sunday morning, August 30. The fatal accident took place beneath Jagruti Nagar Metro Station in Ghatkopar, leaving 14-year-old Ganesh Sunil Mahamuni dead shortly after the collision and his 15-year-old friend, Aryan Paswan, succumbing to his injuries on Monday, August 31.
The accident occurred at around 5.15 am when the two boys were travelling towards Ghatkopar railway station. According to the police, an Eicher tempo allegedly being driven at high speed and in a negligent manner struck their Honda Activa from behind.
According to the police investigation and FIR, Ganesh, a Class IX student, lived with his father Sunil Mahamuni, 44, a Mathadi worker, and his 12-year-old sister in Bhatwadi, Ghatkopar West.
The family had purchased the Honda Activa in June 2026 and normally kept it at a nearby parking area in Ramji Nagar. On Sunday morning, while the family was asleep, Ganesh allegedly took the scooter keys without informing his father and left home with his neighbour and friend, Aryan, who was riding pillion.
The teenagers reportedly travelled only a short distance from their neighbourhood before the accident occurred.
Police said the boys were travelling along the eastbound carriageway of the Ghatkopar-Andheri Link Road when the Karnataka-registered Eicher tempo allegedly approached from behind and hit the scooter with considerable force.
The impact caused the teenagers to fall onto the road and left the scooter badly damaged.
Sunil was informed about the accident by a passerby shortly after 5.30 a.m. Initially unaware that his son had taken the scooter, he checked at home and noticed that the vehicle keys were missing. He then went to the nearby parking area and discovered that the Activa was also gone.
He rushed to the accident site, where he found Aryan injured. Ganesh had already been taken to Rajawadi Hospital by bystanders. Sunil accompanied Aryan to the hospital in an ambulance.
Doctors later declared Ganesh dead. Aryan was admitted for treatment but his condition remained critical. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries on Monday, taking the death toll to two.
The Ghatkopar police traced the tempo and its driver with the help of CCTV footage from the area and the vehicle's registration details. The accused was identified as Prem Prakash Baldevram, 34.
Police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 106, 125 and 281, along with Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act, in connection with the fatal collision.
Police officials said the tempo carried a Karnataka registration number and further investigation is underway.
According to police, no action was initiated against Ganesh's father as he maintained that he was unaware that his son had taken the scooter.
The investigation is continuing to establish the exact circumstances leading to the crash and determine the sequence of events before the collision.
