A total of 146 suicides were reported in the Thane subdivision between January and June 2026, with more than half of the victims aged below 30, according to a report released by the district administration.
The data has raised concerns over the growing prevalence of suicides among young people. Of the 146 cases recorded during the six-month period, 76 victims were below the age of 30, including 15 in the 18-year age group.
The figures are part of a report on accidental deaths prepared by the Thane Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s Office. The report recorded 231 accidental death cases between January and June, of which 146 were classified as suicides. Other cases included accidental deaths caused by drowning, electric shocks, burns, head injuries and other reasons. Some cases were still awaiting chemical analysis or other medical reports.
Mumbra Records Highest Number of Cases
Police station-wise data shows that Mumbra recorded the highest number of suicides, with 38 cases during the six-month period.
Shrinagar recorded 18 cases, while Kasargadawali and Kalwa reported 16 cases each. Kapurbawdi and Vartak Nagar recorded 12 cases each, followed by Shil-Daighar with 11 cases. Chitalsar and Wagle Estate reported nine cases each, while Kopri recorded five cases.
Growing Concern Over Youth Suicides
The high number of suicides among people below 30 has raised concerns beyond law and order, highlighting the need to address the issue from a social and mental-health perspective.
Young adulthood is a crucial period involving education, career decisions, employment, relationships and future financial stability. The district’s six-month figures have therefore highlighted the need for greater attention to the mental well-being of young people and stronger support systems for those facing emotional or social difficulties.
The report also indicates that suicide cases occurred through various means, including hanging, poisoning and drowning. Authorities are expected to examine the underlying social, family, financial and psychological factors associated with these deaths.
