The Matunga police had arrested two miscreants in connection with the vandalism at the iconic Rajgruha, the residence of the late Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, at Dadar. However, the accused have been diagnosed by the coronavirus and are currently being treating for the same. One of the accused was arrested on July 8 and the other on July 22.
On July 7, two men entered the premises of Rajgruh in Hindu Colony in Dadar (East) and shattered the flower pots and potted plants, and pelted stones further damaging a windowpane.
The incident was denounced by prominent political leaders in the state. The Maharashtra government further announced that the historical bungalow where Ambedkar lived for two decades will be given round-the-clock police protection in order to avoid such incidents in the future.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government stated its plans to spend ₹326 crores more on the statue of Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. This comes after the MVA agreed to raise the height of the statue for the memorial at the Indu Mills in Mumbai.
The groundbreaking for this project was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2015, but five years later, the work is still to pick up the pace. However, the project is touted to be completed by April 2022.
The decision had received criticism from its foundation from the people in the state to the Bombay High Court. Bombay High Court back in January had criticized the decision of the government stating that the state has finances to spend on a statue but not for the treatment of the poor who do not have access to proper medical facilities. This happens to be extremely worrisome especially in view of the pandemic.
