The declaration of first-year BA and BCom results by the Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE) of Mumbai University has sparked controversy, with nearly 80 per cent of students failing, prompting concerns over possible errors in the evaluation or result process.
According to the results, 2,543 students appeared for the first-semester BCom examination, of whom 2,086 were declared unsuccessful, while only 457 students passed.
Similarly, 2,224 students appeared for the first-semester BA examination. Of these, 1,764 students failed, while 460 students cleared the exam.
The unusually high failure rate has triggered strong reactions from students, many of whom are working professionals pursuing their education through the university's distance learning programme. They fear that delays or discrepancies in the examination process could adversely affect their academic and professional careers.
Students have also alleged irregularities in the university's result processing, pointing out that those who have failed in one or more subjects have been marked as "failed" in the overall result.
Responding to the concerns, Mumbai University clarified that students should not panic, as those with ATKT (Allowed to Keep Terms) are still eligible for admission to the next semester under existing academic rules. The university assured students that they would not suffer any academic loss and announced that ATKT examinations will begin on August 25.
