Demand for alternative assessment for HSC exams grows

With the state government drafting an alternative assessment pattern in place of the cancelled SSC (class 10 examinations), there is growing demand from parents and students for a similar decision for HSC (class 12 examinations).

According to a report in the Times of India, more than 17 lakh and 13 lakh students appear for the SSC and HSC exams in the state each year. The father of an HSC student said, “There is a lot of uncertainty with respect to Class 12 exams. Students do not know if and when the exams will be conducted, and they are really getting frustrated as a result of it. The government needs to take a decision to relieve them of this anxiety.”

The Maharashtra board exams of Class 12 were to earlier begin from April 23 and of Class 10 from April 30. However, keeping in mind that the country is grappling with the second wave the decision to postpone the exam has been taken.

On the other hand, in view of the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic and the rising number of coronavirus cases, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) class 10 ICSE board exams have been cancelled.

Furthermore, the board had earlier given the students an option of sitting for the exam at a later date. Those who didn’t choose to appear for the exam would have been evaluated on a “fair and unbiased” criterion, the board had stated. This decision now stands withdrawn.
