IITs to increase quota for women students

IIT Council has decided to increase the participation of women in IITs by 20 % after seeing the growing potential of women students and their good performance. The participation of women students in IIT is currently 8%.

In Mumbai, there was a meeting of the Directors and Chairpersons of IIT across the country. In this meeting, other issues which were considered includes increasing the seats of students in IIT, Prime Minister's Research Fellowship, to stop the suicides of students set up of Wellness Center and JEE advance was also discussed.
The elite engineering colleges are currently male dominated with only about 800 of the 4,500 girls who crack JEE every year joining the IITs.
