QS World University Rankings 2026: MU Falls to 901-950 Band Overall, Rises to 25th Globally in Employment Outcomes

Mumbai University has recorded a big fall in the QS World University Rankings 2027, dropping from 664th place last year to the 901-950 band this year. This is the university's lowest overall ranking in the last four years.

Despite this, the university saw an improvement in the employment outcomes indicator. Mumbai University climbed 70 places to secure the 25th position globally. In doing so, it ranked ahead of several Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), including IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.

According to the QS press release, Mumbai University's rise in the employment outcomes category is among the largest single-year improvements recorded for any indicator in this edition of the rankings.

Last year, Mumbai University scored 91 points in the employment outcomes metric and was ranked 95th globally. In the latest rankings, its score increased to 99.5, helping it move up to 25th place worldwide. IIT Bombay received a score of 78.2 in this metric. Delhi University also performed strongly in the same category. It secured a score of 98.6.

Interestingly, IITs continue to lead in employer reputation rankings. The difference between employer reputation and career outcomes is seen in the scores awarded to institutions. Mumbai University received an employer reputation score of 21, while IIT Bombay scored 97.8 in the same indicator.

While IITs continue to enjoy strong global recognition, their scores in the employment outcomes category were lower than those of Mumbai University and Delhi University. As per reports, traditional universities such as Mumbai University and Delhi University often perform well in employment outcomes because they have:

* Large alumni networks

* Graduates working across multiple sectors

* Strong representation in fields such as commerce and other disciplines

According to QS, the employment outcomes indicator measures the following:

* Graduate employability

* Career progression

* Institutional engagement with employers

* Industry connections

* Placement ecosystems

The organisation said the metric is highly sensitive to the strength of industry partnerships and placement networks. Mumbai University and Delhi University differ from IITs in terms of scale and academic offerings. Both universities offer a wider range of courses and produce a larger number of graduates every year.
