As admissions are underway, the Department of Education has released a list of illegal schools. These at last count, stand at 318.

In this list, the number of English schools are more in comparison with Marathi schools. Every year, prior to the academic year, Deputy Directorate of Education releases the list of illegal schools, usually to make parents aware.

According to Anil Bornare, secretary, Maharashtra Teachers’ Association, a major number of illegal schools are found in prime locations such as Thane, Andheri, Santacruz, Goregaon, Byculla, Chembur, Parel, Dadar, Bhandup and Kandivali.

"Every year, the Department of Education comes out with a list of illegal schools but no action is taken. Due to this callous attitude of the education department, students suffer,” said  Bornare.
