Petition filed to regulate shows on internet; Bombay HC issues notice to government

While hearing a petition demanding to regulate content on the internet including web series, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court issued notices to the concerned ministries seeking their response on the Public Interest Litigation (PIL).

The high court issued notices to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting along with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Ministry of Law and Justice, and Ministry of Home Affairs and adjourned the matter till October 31.

According to media reports, Petitioner Divya Gontia in her petition has asked to set up a pre-screening committee in order to regulate online shows and movies along. The petition states Netflix’s Sacred Games and ALTBalaji’s Gandi Baat as examples of shows portraying vulgar content on the internet.

PIL filed seeks actions against the web series which contain obscenity, nudity, and vulgar scenes which is a crime under several provision of certain acts including Cinematograph Act, Information Technology Act and others.
