BMC and Tree Authority Clear Proposals to Cut and Transplant Over 1,000 Trees

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved proposals for the cutting and transplantation of 1,000 trees ahead of a handful of infrastructure projects in Mumbai.

Over 20 proposals were approved by the Tree Authority on Tuesday for cutting and transplanting trees.

The Metro 6 project (Lokhandwala-Jogeshwari-Vikhroli) will need some work that will see the felling and transplantation of 304 trees.

Meanwhile, Metro 2B (DN Nagar-Mandale) and Metro 7 (Andheri East-Dahisar East) will need to clear out 115 and 93 trees respectively. Officials also said that a building construction at JJ Hospital will see the cutting of 117 trees.

An official from the civic Garden Department said, “These proposals are cleared. We will now issue a permission copy to the agencies. Three proposals were held back and discussion will take place in the next meeting.”

Officials added that agencies have been asked to transplant up to three times the amount of trees that are felled for development projects.

This follows in the footsteps of the BMC announcing that it will only plant trees that are indigenous to Mumbai in its buildings across the city. This was cited as a feasible measure given the soil conditions in the city.
