Navi Mumbai Regional Transport Office (RTO) is preparing to modernise the vehicle fitness testing system by replacing traditional manual inspections with advanced automated technology.
Under the Central Government’s latest regulations, all transport vehicles will now be required to obtain fitness certification only through authorised Automated Testing Stations (ATS). In line with this move, a state-of-the-art automated vehicle inspection centre is being developed at the RTO testing track in Nerul and is expected to start operations within the next three months.
According to officials, the new facility will make the vehicle fitness testing process fully digital, quicker and more transparent. The inspections will be carried out entirely through computerised systems, eliminating human intervention and ensuring greater accuracy in testing.
The automated setup will evaluate multiple technical aspects of vehicles, including brake performance, wheel alignment, steering condition, suspension efficiency, shock absorber functionality, emission standards and headlight alignment. The system will also inspect the underbody condition and several other safety-related parameters using advanced diagnostic equipment.
Officials stated that the upgraded process will significantly reduce waiting time for vehicle owners and drivers, as the complete inspection is expected to be finished within minutes. The system will instantly generate a detailed digital inspection report, improving both reliability and transparency in the issuance of fitness certificates.
