Mumbai Ranked In Top Five Global Food Cities; Becomes India’s Leading Culinary Hub

Mumbai has been named one of the top five food cities in the world in the latest TasteAtlas rankings. This makes it the only Indian destination to appear in the global top ten. This recognition comes from the platform’s research on local dishes, food traditions, and popular recipes. 

This year, Mumbai secured fifth place for the second year in a row. TasteAtlas praised the city’s rich culinary scene and vibrant street-food culture. The list highlighted dishes like vada pav, amba, modak, pav bhaji, ragda pattice, ice halwa, Bombay biryani, bombil fry, Bombay sandwich, and bhelpuri. 

The platform also named well-known eateries such as:

* Leopold Cafe

* Nawab Saheb

* Baba Falooda

* The Bombay Canteen

* Gurukripa

* Khyber

* Namak

Traditional restaurants such as Shree Thaker Bhojanalay, Ram Ashraya, and Cafe Madras were noted for preserving Mumbai’s food heritage. In the broader TasteAtlas Awards 2025–2026, Indian cuisine as a whole ranked 13th among the world’s top 100 cuisines.

TasteAtlas stated that the rankings were created from 590,228 valid food ratings for 16,357 dishes across 18,828 cities. The list features the 100 cities with the highest average scores for their regional and national foods.

These Indian cities also appeared in the global rankings:

1. Amritsar at 48th

2. New Delhi at 53rd

3. Hyderabad at 54th

4. Kolkata at 73rd

5. Chennai at 93rd. 

Each city was recognised for its distinct food identity. Amritsar was noted for dishes like sarson ka saag and Amritsari kulcha. Delhi was recognised for butter chicken and dal makhani. Hyderabad was praised for its Nizami-era cuisine and biryani. Kolkata stood out for kathi rolls and rasgulla.
