BMC organises eye checkup camps in Mumbai from September 17 to October 2

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has recently started the implementation of the 'Namo Netra Sanjeevani' campaign in Mumbai and the campaign will continue from September 17 to October 2. Citizens will be able to get their eyes checked between 10 am and 3 pm. The camps organised under this will mainly check for primary eye disorders, prescription of glasses, cataracts, etc. These cataract surgery camps have been organised through suburban hospitals and municipal medical colleges.

Central Government's goal to reduce blindness rate

As mentioned in the Central Government's national policy, the target has been set to reduce the blindness rate from 1.4 percent to 0.25 percent by 2025. Keeping this objective in mind, the 'Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan' will be implemented by the Government of Maharashtra under the National Blindness Control Program in coordination with the Chief Minister's Relief Fund, Charitable Hospital Help Desk and the Municipal Corporation. Under this, eye screening camps were inaugurated on Wednesday at 58 different locations in Mumbai. 

Survey and eye examination at 58 locations

For this campaign, public awareness will be created through 'Asha Sevika' and 'Arogya Sevika' of the Public Health Department. Survey and eye check-up camps have been organised at 58 different locations in Mumbai. These camps will run from 10 am to 3 pm daily from September 17 to October 2. Eye check-up camps will be organised at 58 different locations, including the Murli Deora Municipal Eye Hospital of the Municipal Corporation, as well as major hospitals like K.E.M. Hospital, B.Y.L. Nair Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, and Dr. R.N. Cooper Hospital. Additionally, the camps will be conducted in 10 suburban municipal hospitals, 33 polyclinics across all wards, and 10 locations in collaboration with various voluntary organizations.

The Municipal Corporation has urged people experiencing symptoms such as eye irritation, swelling of the eyes, constant watering, blurred or uncomfortable vision, gradual or sudden loss of vision, persistent headaches, seeing halos around lights, growths or membranes in the eyes, to get examined at these eye camps.

Additionally, between September 17 and October 2, the goal has been set to perform one lakh cataract surgeries across the state through government, non-government, voluntary, and private organisations. As part of this campaign, eye check-up camps will also be used to raise public awareness about eye donation.
