In a bid to improve the safety of those who are allowed to travel by trains in Mumbai, Central Railway (CR) has announced a deal with a private hand sanitizer manufacturing company which will provide free sanitizers to outstation and local trains travelling within CR’s periphery.

The authorities mentioned that this move is part of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and will see sanitizers distributed to 400 passengers from local or outstation trains while their luggage will be disinfected using sprays.

This move includes disinfecting of around 87 railway ticket booking counter as well as the areas around it to maintain safety. Social distancing is also to be strictly practised at railway stations, though this remains a massive concern within the trains, especially if they’re packed with passengers.

The authorities added that hand sanitizers will be seen on local trains that run between CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), Kalyan, and Karjat Railway stations. Additionally, these sanitizers will also be provided at Harbour Line railways stations.

Railway authorities are taking every possible precaution to make sure those using local trains as their primary source of commuting aren’t infected by the virus. The city’s local trains are being sanitized every two hours to make sure the environment is safe for passengers.

For now, Mumbai’s local trains are running at limited capacity with only essential workers from some government and private sector agencies allowed to travel. Though train operations resumed in some capacity back in June, the authorities had to pull it back owing to a steep rise in COVID-19 cases across the city.
