Mumbaikars battling with psychiatric and lifestyle ailments: BMC

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently carried out a study to seek common health ailments Mumbaikars face and as per the findings, psychiatric ailments, diabetes, hypertension and dog bites are the common reasons for Mumbaikars to seek help at city’s civic-run hospitals.

This is the first time that the BMC has studied disease patterns of the patients who visit BMC-led 175 dispensaries, 15 peripheral hospitals and four tertiary care hospitals. The survey was carried out on the basis of data collected between October 2015 and September 2017.

Survey findings

Tertiary Hospitals- KEM Hospital, Parel, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital, Sion, BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central and Dr RN Cooper Municipal General Hospital, Vile Parle

Data collected- 5.59 lakh patients

Common diagnosis- Psychiatric ailments, diabetes, hypertension and dog bites

Peripheral hospitals

Data collected- 5.26 lakh patients

Common diagnosis- Fever, diabetes, hypertension, dog bites and psychiatric problems

Dispensaries

Data collected- 62.74 lakh patients

Common diagnosis- Acute respiratory illness, fever, diarrhoea, diabetes and hypertension
