In a remarkable neurosurgical case, doctors at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali successfully removed a large, highly vascular brain tumour from a 50-year-old male patient in just one hour.

The patient, who had presented with persistent headache, disorientation and vision-related problems, made an excellent recovery and was discharged on the third day after surgery.

An MRI of the brain revealed a large tumour in the left parieto-occipital region, attached to the dura, the protective covering of the brain. The tumour was found to be highly vascular, making surgical removal particularly challenging because of the potential risk of significant blood loss and injury to critical surrounding brain structures.

The complex procedure was performed by Dr. Samir Nitin Parekh, a dynamic surgeon specialising in brain and spine-related surgical and non-surgical procedures. With meticulous pre-operative planning and precise microsurgical techniques, the entire tumour was successfully removed within approximately one hour.

A key highlight of the case was the patient's immediate neurological recovery. Following completion of the procedure, the patient was extubated on the operating table and was found to have no neurological deficit. His post-operative recovery remained stable, allowing him to mobilise and progress rapidly through the recovery process.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Samir Nitin Parekh said, “Tumours located in the parieto-occipital region can present unique surgical challenges, particularly when they are large and highly vascular. Careful surgical planning, precise dissection and control of the tumour’s blood supply are critical for achieving complete removal while protecting the surrounding brain. In this patient, we were able to achieve complete tumour removal within an hour, with no neurological deficit, which is a very encouraging outcome.”

The successful case highlights the importance of early evaluation of persistent headaches, vision changes and unexplained disorientation, as these symptoms can sometimes be associated with underlying neurological conditions.

Dr. Samir Nitin Parekh appealed to citizens not to ignore persistent headaches or blurred vision. “A headache that does not go away, particularly when accompanied by blurred vision, disorientation or other unusual symptoms, should not be neglected. These symptoms may have several causes, but timely medical evaluation can help identify serious neurological conditions at an early stage. I urge people to consult a doctor if such symptoms persist rather than waiting for them to worsen,” he said.

The outcome at Apex Superspeciality Hospital, Borivali, demonstrates the role of advanced neurosurgical expertise and timely intervention in managing complex brain tumours while aiming for rapid recovery and preservation of neurological function.
