St. George’s Hospital, a government-run healthcare facility in Mumbai, is set to introduce Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), an advanced treatment that promotes faster healing of chronic and complex wounds. The initiative is expected to make specialized wound care more accessible to patients in the public healthcare system.

HBOT involves placing patients inside a pressurized chamber where they breathe 100 percent oxygen. The increased oxygen concentration in the bloodstream helps damaged tissues heal more effectively, stimulates the growth of new blood vessels, and reduces the risk of infection.

According to hospital officials, the therapy will be particularly beneficial for patients suffering from diabetic foot ulcers, non-healing wounds, severe burns, radiation injuries, and certain infections that do not respond adequately to conventional treatment.

The addition of the HBOT facility marks a significant upgrade to the hospital’s treatment capabilities and is expected to reduce the need for referrals to private hospitals, where such therapies are often expensive.

Medical experts believe the facility will improve patient outcomes and provide an important treatment option for individuals requiring advanced wound management. Preparations for installing the equipment and operationalising the unit are currently underway.

Once functional, the HBOT centre will be among the few such facilities available in Mumbai’s public healthcare network, offering specialised care at affordable costs.
