An entire team of six gynaecologists at Bhayander's Pandit Bhimsen Joshi Hospital has resigned recently alleging harassment at the hands of local politicians and social workers.

The doctors wrote to the medical superintendent of the corporation-run hospital, stating that they will stop attending outpatient and emergency services with immediate effect. The gynaecology unit at the 200-bed hospital works solely with honorary doctors, who carry out around 120-150 deliveries every month.

Senior gynaecologist Dr Vipin Checker said that they were forced to take the decision due to the non-conducive work environment. Most don’t understand the hospital doesn’t have a full-time anaesthetist, paediatrician or a sonologist and, therefore, the doctor-on-call may have little choice if it’s a high-risk pregnancy or a complicated delivery, he added.

The doctors further said that even the meagre remuneration of Rs 8,000 per month is delayed.
