A significant visit to Mumbai has been scheduled for February 16, during which a memorandum of understanding is expected to be signed between Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and the Maharashtra state government. The engagement has been planned with emphasis on strengthening cooperation in healthcare delivery and agricultural development. The visit has been announced at a time when renewed attention has been drawn internationally following the release of documents by the US Department of Justice that included references to Jeffrey Epstein.

During the Mumbai visit, a detailed review of the city’s malaria eradication programme is set to be undertaken. A primary healthcare facility located at Banganga in Walkeshwar has been included in the itinerary. Essential services such as immunisation and basic medical care are routinely provided at this centre to residents of nearby slum communities. Additionally, the facility has been positioned as a hub for malaria monitoring, where pest control officers are deployed for systematic door-to-door inspections aimed at identifying mosquito breeding sites and detecting larvae. A comprehensive presentation on these initiatives is expected to be delivered.

Field visits to slum areas in the D ward have also been arranged, and officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation are to accompany the delegation. On-ground operational processes are expected to be observed, including methods used for identifying vector breeding zones and implementing malaria management protocols. Treatment pathways for affected patients are likely to be reviewed, and interactions with field-level surveillance personnel are anticipated.

The forthcoming visit has followed an earlier engagement held on March 20, 2025, at the Sahyadri Guest House, where discussions were conducted with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. During that meeting, the potential integration of Microsoft-led Artificial Intelligence systems into governance structures had been explored, particularly within healthcare, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors. The broader objective of technological enablement in public administration had been emphasised.

Public attention had previously been drawn to a viral video showing Gates alongside cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar sharing vada pav, a moment that had circulated widely on social media platforms. That earlier visit had been undertaken as part of commemorative activities marking 25 years of the Gates Foundation’s engagement in India. Continued collaboration in public health and development partnerships is expected to be reinforced through the upcoming visit.
