444 homes for mill workers

Mumbai - Mill workers could soon have 444 more homes to their names in the Lalbaug area, their original stomping grounds.

The regional housing authority, Mhada has secured 3873.81 sq m land for building homes for the mill workers. This land has been sourced from land packets acquired from Mafatlal Mills, Matulya Mills, Hindoostan Mills A and B, Victoria Mills and the MSTC. However, since these land packets are insufficient to construct the proposed homes, Mhada has now requested the BMC to exchange the land packets with land at Lalbaug's Western India Mill premises. The proposal has reportedly got the BMC's informal nod and the official approval could come through soon. This means 444 homes will come up on the land for mill workers. 218 transit homes will also be constructed on this land, it is learnt.
