The Belasis flyover, crucial east-west connector in South Mumbai, was inaugurated virtually today, February 26, at 11 am by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
With this, the newly-constructed railway overbridge will soon be open to the general public, aiming to ease traffic, after the barricades are removed. This also marks a major upgrade in South Mumbai’s transport infrastructure.
The flyover links key areas including Tardeo, Nagpada and Mumbai Central railway station, offering commuters a smoother alternative route.
MLA Gopichand Padalkar and other dignitaries were present during the online ceremony.
Currently, the bridge is known as the railway flyover connecting Tardeo-Nagpada and Mumbai Central and the name 'Bellasis' is no longer officially mentioned.
The total length of the bridge is 333 meters. Of which, 138.39 meters comprises on the east and 157.39 meters on the west. The span on the railway line is 36.90 meters. A 7-meter wide carriageway and wide footpaths have been provided on both sides for safe pedestrian movement.
Replacement of the old bridge
The 130-year-old bridge, built in 1893, was demolished in June 2024 after it was found to be unfit for structural inspection. In its place, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has constructed a modern cable-stayed flyover.
Officials said the project is expected to significantly reduce congestion on key arterial roads such as Jehangir Boman Behram Road (earlier Bellasis Road), Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg (Grant Road), Pathe Bapurao Marg, and the Mahalaxmi station bridge.
