The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Central Railway (CR) have set a deadline of May 31, 2026, to complete the work on the Sion East-West Railway Bridge. Commuters have been facing major difficulties since the closure of the century-old bridge in August 2024.
The closure of the Sion Railway Bridge has forced pedestrians and vehicle owners to take a detour. There was a strong opposition to the demolition of the bridge as there were no safe alternative routes available as there are schools, colleges and hospitals in the area.
The foot over bridge (FOB) built by the CR was inaugurated in October. The remaining demolition work could continue without any hitches.
On Tuesday, December 2, Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar held a review meeting at the BMC headquarters with Joint Commissioner of Police (Transport) Anil Kumbharen and senior officials of the BMC and CR.
The railway section of the Sion Bridge is being constructed by the Railway Department, while the roads, two pedestrian underpasses and other related works are being done by the Municipal Corporation.

After this, the remaining works falling within the railway boundary will be completed.
Abhijit Bangar said, "If all the work goes as planned, the entire bridge will be completed by May 31, 2026 and will be opened for traffic from June 1, 2026."
